Daily Dispatches: 42nd Quebec City Summer Festival â Days 1 and 2
|
Posted by: Publisher on Sunday, July 12, 2009 - 05:51 PM |

By Kris King
The 42nd Quebec City Summer Festival began with a video interview with Thomas Lauderdale, founder, artistic director, pianist and primary songwriter for Pink Martini behind the massive festival stage on the Plains of Abraham. Lauderdale, a funny and engaging man talked about the early days of playing for political and environmental causes as a student studying history and literature at Harvard.
Singer China Forbes was also a student at Harvard, although neither of them were studying music, their late-night musical get-togethers eventually evolved, and in 1994 Pink Martini was formed. Beginning with four members, over the years it grew to twelve members that have since performed with symphonies around world. They have performed at the Hollywood Bowl, the Kennedy Centre and opening party for the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Daily Dispatches: Bruce Lundvall at the 30th Montreal Jazz Festival
|
Posted by: Publisher on Thursday, July 02, 2009 - 05:41 PM |
|
July 1:
Our action packed day began with a press conference with the President of EMI/Blue Note Records since 1984. Lundvall was attending as the first recipient of an award named after him to recognise the achievements of non-musicians who have contributed to the development of music, through media, concert or record industries. It has been said that Lundvall, a warm and engaging man with great stories of his years in the world of jazz is gifted with a pair of ears directly connected to his heart.
Says Lundvall âItâs a survivor award â thatâs really what it is. Jazz artists are my heart. The most wonderful people in the world are jazz musicians, they are the most talented, the most witty and the most wonderful people to work with.â When asked how he found Nora Jones he simply said, âI answered the phone. Michelle White brought her in, I thought she might sell maybe three thousands records; her first CD sold 23 million copies.â

June 30, 2009:
Our first flight on Porter Airlines to attend the Montreal Jazz Festival allowed us to fly with ease from downtown Toronto, a short ferry ride to the island airport delivered us to check-in and ease our way through security for the one-hour and ten minute flight to Montreal. Food and beverage are offered FREE by their friendly staff.
I hit the road running after landing in Montreal and went straight to the festival press centre where Stevie Wonder was doing a press conference at the Montreal Jazz Festival opening day.

Quebec City Summer Festival Celebrates 42nd Anniversary
|

|
Now in its 42nd year, the QuĂ©bec City Summer Festival continues to turn heads, bring the crowds to their feet, and attract music lovers from far and wide. The party will kick off and wrap up en français with two of QuĂ©becâs hottest acts, The Lost Fingers and Pierre Lapointe. In the days between, four international sensationsâ suprĂȘme NTM, Kiss, PlĂĄcido Domingo, and Stingâwill bring their talent and energy to the Plains of Abraham!
"With such a prestigious lineup, the Québec City Summer Festival has staked its claim as the greatest outdoor music event in Canada," noted executive director Daniel Gélinas. "Every year, we pull out all the stops to attract national and international music stars and offer original, exclusive, and one-of-a-kind programming that, from one edition to the next, has helped make Québec City a prime summer destination, and this festival, a unique urban event."
"Thanks to government support, especially from new contributor Industry Canada, we are able to ratchet up the quality even more. We have also received considerable financial assistance from Desjardins to present the five headline Desjardins acts," added Marie-France Poulin, chair of the Québec City Summer Festival Board of Director

The 29th Festival International De Jazz De Montreal 2008
|
Posted by: Publisher on Monday, May 25, 2009 - 12:37 PM |
|
By Kris King
The 29th Montreal International Jazz Festival has to rank as my personal favorite festival of the year â ANY year. The worldâs largest musical event transforms the heart of Montreal into Festival central for 11 days and nights with so many concerts my head was spinning just trying to keep up and see as much as humanly possible in the six days that I was there. Truth be told, I wish I could be there for every minute of the 11 day festival.
What makes this festival one of the worlds largest and most brilliant programming events is the cooperation of the city of Montreal. Every year for 29 years Montreal throws its doors wide open and shakes off the welcome mat for the hundreds of thousands of people who cram into the many indoor and outdoor concerts on schedule. Several main arteries in a large section of downtown Montreal are closed off, allowing for the kind of staging and pedestrian traffic that comes with an event of this magnitude.
