Daily Dispatches: Bruce Lundvall at the 30th Montreal Jazz Festival
|
Posted by: Publisher on Thursday, July 02, 2009 - 05:41 PM |
|
July 1: Our action packed day began with a press conference with the President of EMI/Blue Note Records since 1984. Lundvall was attending as the first recipient of an award named after him to recognise the achievements of non-musicians who have contributed to the development of music, through media, concert or record industries. It has been said that Lundvall, a warm and engaging man with great stories of his years in the world of jazz is gifted with a pair of ears directly connected to his heart.
Says Lundvall âItâs a survivor award â thatâs really what it is. Jazz artists are my heart. The most wonderful people in the world are jazz musicians, they are the most talented, the most witty and the most wonderful people to work with.â When asked how he found Nora Jones he simply said, âI answered the phone. Michelle White brought her in, I thought she might sell maybe three thousands records; her first CD sold 23 million copies.â

The 29th Festival International De Jazz De Montreal 2008
|
Posted by: Publisher on Monday, May 25, 2009 - 12:37 PM |
|
By Kris King
The 29th Montreal International Jazz Festival has to rank as my personal favorite festival of the year â ANY year. The worldâs largest musical event transforms the heart of Montreal into Festival central for 11 days and nights with so many concerts my head was spinning just trying to keep up and see as much as humanly possible in the six days that I was there. Truth be told, I wish I could be there for every minute of the 11 day festival.
What makes this festival one of the worlds largest and most brilliant programming events is the cooperation of the city of Montreal. Every year for 29 years Montreal throws its doors wide open and shakes off the welcome mat for the hundreds of thousands of people who cram into the many indoor and outdoor concerts on schedule. Several main arteries in a large section of downtown Montreal are closed off, allowing for the kind of staging and pedestrian traffic that comes with an event of this magnitude.

Reviews: The Riviera Maya Jazz Festival 2008

By Kris King
I fell in love with Mexico at the sixth edition of the Riviera Maya International Jazz Festival, held November 26-30th. The festival featured a line-up of top Mexican jazz artists such as Jose Antonio (Pepe) Moran, Beaujean Project, Aguamala, Hector Infanzon, Iraida Noriega, Sacbe, and Italian artist Luca Littera along with American smooth jazz artists Earl Klugh, David Sanborn, Fourplay and founding member of the Mahavishnu Orchestra, drummer Billy Cobham.
Mamitaâs Beach Club hosted the event on their soft coral sand beach. The festival has enjoyed increasing numbers of people every year, this year the dates capitalized on the American Thanksgiving long weekend attracting thousands of locals and tourists alike. People come from all over Mexico to hear some of their favorites like Hector Infanzon and Iraida Noriega and stake out their turf on the beach early in the day.

Reviews: The Playboy Jazz Cruise 'Maiden Voyage'
|
Posted by: Publisher on Wednesday, February 25, 2009 - 12:34 AM |

By Kriss Hammond
It was chart topper talent on the first annual Playboy Jazz Cruise in January, 2009, and the 24th full charter theme cruise from Jazz Cruises LLC www.jazzcruisesllc.com.
What a roster of fantastic jazz stars that was pulled out of the music DNA pool on the Playboy cruise, hosted by Marcus Miller: It was a veritable heritage of jazz, from James Moody and James Carter blowing the barnacles off with sax styles seldom seen; Roy Hargroveâs trumpet touted tantalizing tenderness; and Herbie Hancockâs keyboard was a kaleidoscope of well kept secrets hidden in his fingers but revealed on Formal Night at sea.
Holland America Line also had a reason to celebrate because it had just won the Best Cruise Value award for the 17th consecutive year. It all came together with beautiful weather, hot jazz, and smooth cruising.
