Natalie MacLean’s award winning book ‘Red, White and Drunk All Over’ is an informative, often hilarious trip through wine cellars and vineyards around the globe. Macleans engaging wit and personality shine throughout the book and will have you laughing out loud while searching for the perfect bottle of wine.
MacLean presents a wealth of history, information and humorous anecdotes about wine, the grape, far-flung vineyards, vintners and the people she meets along the way in this fascinating and entertaining book of the world of wine.
Beginning in Beaune, Burgundy MacLean arrives at Domaine de la Romanee-Conti considered to be one of the greatest wine regions in the world, to discuss pinot noir with vintner Aubert de Villaine; she has a meeting with Georg Riedel who represents the tenth generation of his family to make crystal stemware. Riedel explains the importance of how the size and shape of a glass can profoundly affect the taste and smell of the wine inside.
In the Tale of Two Wine Stores chapter, MacLean talks with San Francisco’s managing wine buyer for The Jug Shop, Chuck Hayward. Recognized as an expert in the international wine community, Hayward explains the virtues of Australian wines; screw caps vs. cork and the tasting points between inexpensive wines and higher priced wines along with choosing the right wine for any occasion.
From San Francisco MacLean makes her way to New York where she spends a day working alongside Ellisa Cooper at Discovery Wines, one of the most innovative wine stores in Manhattan. Featuring theatrical lighting, open hardwood floors and wide aisles with a Zen-like symmetry it is a huge contrast from the homey, jumbled quirkiness of The Jug shop. Discovery Wines has kiosks in the store that will not only scan the bottle for price point but also give the buyer the vintage, the grapes in the blend, how the wine was made, a history of the vineyard including a map of the region and the requisite picture of the winemaker, smiling in overalls next to a barrel.
Having a dinner party and don’t know what wine to buy to match the meal? No problem as MacLean delves head on with which wines to avoid, which wine will go with your salad, spicy dishes, sweet and sour and even what to pair with take-out, fast food or frozen dinners, MacLean will walk you through from fine-dining to burgers, cheese and chocolate.
MacLean’s delightfully irresistible prose will entice even the most rigid teetotalers to imbibe her adventures of the grape and crack open ‘Red, White and Drunk All Over – a Wine-Soaked Journey from Grape to Glass’.
