The 29th Festival International De Jazz De Montreal 2008

By Kris King
The 29th Montreal International Jazz Festival has to rank as my personal favorite festival of the year – ANY year. The world’s largest musical event transforms the heart of Montreal into Festival central for 11 days and nights with so many concerts my head was spinning just trying to keep up and see as much as humanly possible in the six days that I was there. Truth be told, I wish I could be there for every minute of the 11 day festival.
What makes this festival one of the worlds largest and most brilliant programming events is the cooperation of the city of Montreal. Every year for 29 years Montreal throws its doors wide open and shakes off the welcome mat for the hundreds of thousands of people who cram into the many indoor and outdoor concerts on schedule. Several main arteries in a large section of downtown Montreal are closed off, allowing for the kind of staging and pedestrian traffic that comes with an event of this magnitude.

Quebec City, surrounded by a 4.6-kilometer wall is North America’s oldest city; capitol of the province of Quebec and the seat of the National Assembly, it is also one of North America’s most beautiful and romantic destinations. Founded in 1608 by French navigator and explorer Samuel de Champlain, it is now home to over 638,000 people who share their effervescent city with over 5 million tourists each year. Every season is the perfect season to visit Quebec City and find out why the citizens have a special “joie de vivre”.

Island Hopping in the Bahamas - Nassau, Paradise Island, Grand Bahamas

With 700 islands and 2,400 cays, the Bahamas is THE place to go island hopping. Surrounded by 100,000 square miles of clear turquoise waters teaming with abundant marine life, no matter what your island vacation preference, you are sure to find it on one of the thirty inhabited islands that make up the Bahamas. Island hopping is easy and accessible by way of numerous scheduled flights, private charters, or planes and boats for hire. A relaxing way to get into the slower pace of island life is to take an inter-island mailboat, and if you just cannot let go of the pace of the city and you just have to get there, the fast ferry is the way to go.

Peru is a country of unsolved ancient mysteries, priceless archeological treasures and a cuisine as diversified as the country itself. Divided into three regions: coastal, highlands and jungle, each region has its own character, distinct tastes, music and cultural customs. Collectively, this agricultural country, the largest grower of potatoes (eighty three varieties), contains eighty four of the earth’s one hundred and four ecosystems.
Landing in Lima at midnight on an AA flight from JFK after a change of terminals and planes in Miami, a rep from PromPeru and Alli, our guide for the week, greet and transfer our group of four to the Sonesta El Olivar Hotel.

PAYNES BAY, Barbados — Barbados, a small pear-shaped island located at the eastern end of the Lesser Antilles near Venezuela, is a breezy mix of the Atlantic and the Caribbean. It’s especially breezy if you’re atop Farley Hill facing east, watching the Atlantic waves down below trying to smash the coral island’s beaches and rugged cliffs to smithereens – but look west and there’s endless hectares of sugar cane blowing in the wind, helping reinforce that warm feeling of serenity that inevitably overwhelms visitors.

November 21, 1998 -Toronto to Montego Bay
Leaving family and friends behind in Toronto for sixty-four straight days of work aboard the MS Sundream cruise ship may have been the most difficult decision I've had to make the past twenty years. Roadwork was mandatory early in my musician career, but as the years passed I've been able to create work opportunities and remain grounded within southern Ontario.
We arrive at Terminal 2 with what seems just enough time to share good-byes, check baggage, and claim passenger ticket. Unfortunately, the flight to Montego Bay, Jamaica was oversold, a questionable practice by Air Canada.
Vocalist Aura Rully and I were placed on a stand-by list. The deal was, if economy seats weren't available we'd be graciously compensated for our misfortune and booked on a later flight. Fortunately, our status as entertainers ranked high on the waiting list, making the mini drama only a minor inconvenience when Air Canada upgraded us to Executive Class offering prime front row seats. I must admit this is the only way to travel - the most comfort I've ever been accorded in flight.

Montreal is a bustling city that is the largest commercial center in Canada with over 3,000 businesses, including the largest collection of fashion boutiques and ready-to-wear shops in the country. This would explain the stylish sense of fashion Montreal inhabitants are known for.
When I received an invitation to visit Quebec at Christmas I jumped at the chance. The romantic city is a marvel of art, music, culture and some of the most wonderful little boutique hotels that are perfect for a romantic vacation.
