The 30th anniversary of the FIJM started off with a bang! Stevie Wonder performed a free outdoor concert for over 200,000 people, while the Lincoln Centre Orchestra featuring Wynton Marsalis performed at the sold-out Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier Theatre in the Place des Arts. The evening was capped with a nearly half-hour fireworks display in the heart of Montreal that got the 30th Anniversary party off to a magnificent start.
It was also the premiere of their new festival headquarters and outdoor festival site that included a newly renovated building that houses the Maison du Festival de Jazz on the all-new Place des Festivals, a traffic-free site in the heart of the Quartier des spectacles. The Maison du Festival de Jazz features a performance hall, a restaurant, a great new press room, a Hall of Fame, an exhibition space and a major audiovisual documentation centre open to the public.

By Kris King
The 42nd Quebec City Summer Festival began with a video interview with Thomas Lauderdale, founder, artistic director, pianist and primary songwriter for Pink Martini behind the massive festival stage on the Plains of Abraham. Lauderdale, a funny and engaging man talked about the early days of playing for political and environmental causes as a student studying history and literature at Harvard.
Singer China Forbes was also a student at Harvard, although neither of them were studying music, their late-night musical get-togethers eventually evolved, and in 1994 Pink Martini was formed. Beginning with four members, over the years it grew to twelve members that have since performed with symphonies around world. They have performed at the Hollywood Bowl, the Kennedy Centre and opening party for the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Daily Dispatches: Bruce Lundvall at the 30th Montreal Jazz Festival
|
Posted by: Publisher on Thursday, July 02, 2009 - 05:41 PM |
|
July 1:
Our action packed day began with a press conference with the President of EMI/Blue Note Records since 1984. Lundvall was attending as the first recipient of an award named after him to recognise the achievements of non-musicians who have contributed to the development of music, through media, concert or record industries. It has been said that Lundvall, a warm and engaging man with great stories of his years in the world of jazz is gifted with a pair of ears directly connected to his heart.
Says Lundvall âItâs a survivor award â thatâs really what it is. Jazz artists are my heart. The most wonderful people in the world are jazz musicians, they are the most talented, the most witty and the most wonderful people to work with.â When asked how he found Nora Jones he simply said, âI answered the phone. Michelle White brought her in, I thought she might sell maybe three thousands records; her first CD sold 23 million copies.â

June 30, 2009:
Our first flight on Porter Airlines to attend the Montreal Jazz Festival allowed us to fly with ease from downtown Toronto, a short ferry ride to the island airport delivered us to check-in and ease our way through security for the one-hour and ten minute flight to Montreal. Food and beverage are offered FREE by their friendly staff.
I hit the road running after landing in Montreal and went straight to the festival press centre where Stevie Wonder was doing a press conference at the Montreal Jazz Festival opening day.
