|
Posted by: Publisher on Monday, May 07, 2007 - 06:54 PM |
|
In little over quarter of a century the Long Island wine industry has grown from one small vineyard to 3,000 acres of vines and over thirty wineries producing world-class wines.Located in New York State, on the East Coast of the United States, Long Island extends some 120 miles into the Atlantic Ocean. Its maritime climate, geography and soil characteristics provide ideal conditions for producing wines of exceptional quality.
The Long Island wine region encompasses Nassau and Suffolk Counties, with the majority of wineries and vineyards at the East End, on the North and South Forks. Here, age-old growing techniques are combined with state-of-the-art technology to produce a range of world-class wines from specific varietals and selected blends. It has been said by many that Long Island is one of the country's most exciting wine producing regions today, with great reviews and high praise found in major food and wine publications nationwide. As the awards continue to accumulate, Long Island wines are increasingly sought after in fine restaurants and wine shops from coast to coast.

The Baroque World of Fernando Botero Exhibition at Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec
|
Posted by: Publisher on Friday, February 02, 2007 - 02:47 PM |
|
Painter, sculptor and draftsman Fernando Botero depicts the human drama with emotion and irony, in a Baroque style, with a sense of observation that is sometimes mocking and sometimes deeply moving. Botero has created a unique world that is both accessible and enigmatic, illustrated by a strange mixture of violence et beauty.
Variations on human comedy, Colombian artist Fernando Botero’s paintings, sculptures, and sketches represent a unique but nonetheless readily accessible world of fantasy, illustrated with irony and mockery, in a touchingly moving way. The exhibition, a Canadian first featuring over one hundred works, is on at Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec from January 25 to April 22, 2007.

First Nations Artist Silyas Saunders Fashions Legend and Melds Myth
|
Posted by: Publisher on Friday, February 02, 2007 - 01:05 AM |
|
It started with a spoon. Then a plaque or two…and even a keen interest in the traditional artwork of his people. The end result? A prominent First Nations carver dedicated to his culture, wise in the ways of history and creation. But for elder Nuxalk carver Silyas Saunders, life was not always marked by his talent for creation. Instead, for many of his 60-odd years, days were spent toiling as a logger and a fisherman.
Today, Saunders finds himself in quite a different role – as a creative force within his community, fashioning a host of pieces, great and small, all to celebrate his ancestors and their rich heritage. And his is an important story to tell. As one of the last in a generation to speak the Nuxalk language, Saunders now toils in his own studio in Bella Coola (in the Cariboo Chilcotin Coast), crafting both traditional masks, and those which call upon ancient Nuxalk myths. And his efforts have most certainly been recognized. In 1999 (at age 68), Saunders was celebrated as the first international artist to be awarded the prestigious Native Artist Fellowship from the National Museum of the American Indian in New York City.

Tour Tasmania's Haunted Port Arthur Prison

Posted by: Publisher on Sunday, October 29, 2006 - 02:46 PM |
|
By John Kernaghan
Port Arthur, Australia
It's not difficult to imagine tortured and restless souls wandering the grounds when you walk amongst the ruins of the infamous Port Arthur prison on the Tasman Peninsula. Fully 12,000 men and boys served horrible time here, including many Canadians transported here for crimes ranging from murder to daring to rebel against the British in Upper Canada in 1837.
And, at least one of them, murderer Edwin Merrit of Quebec, rests (by day, at least) on the Isle of the Dead just across the harbour. Is he one of the apparitions who flits amongst the trees, as several visitors have claimed after taking this historic site's ghost tours?
